    A adaptação da organista à atualização do hinário da Igreja Congregação Cristã no Brasil : um estudo preliminar com estratégias para sua aprendizagem

    O objetivo desse trabalho é investigar a adaptação da organista com relação às modificações nos hinários oficiais da Igreja Congregação Cristã no Brasil, enfatizando as mudanças do Hinário 4 para o Hinário 5. Também foi averiguado qual o impacto das mudanças no estudo dos hinos novos e antigos (onde houve várias mudanças) e qual a repercussão das organistas com relação ao acréscimo do terceiro pentagrama no Hinário 5. O presente estudo foi delineado com base em dois questionários elaborados e enviados para as organistas da Igreja Congregação Cristã no Brasil (uma vez que apenas as mulheres tocam o órgão), tanto para as oficializadas com profunda experiência no Hinário 4, como para as organistas aprendizes que só tiveram contato com o Hinário 5. Ficou evidente que muitas organistas oficializadas ainda apresentam dificuldades em tocar os hinos alterados do hinário devido às diferenças entre mão esquerda e pedal. As aprendizes não reportaram ter problemas porque nunca estudaram com outro hinário. Como na Igreja Congregação Cristã no Brasil somente hinos são tocados durante o culto, foram elaborados exercícios para auxiliar na adaptação do novo hinário, já que em 194 dos 480 hinos, as notas mais graves da mão esquerda e do pedal são distintas durante alguns compassos. O material produzido poderá auxiliar principalmente as organistas oficializadas, tornando-se também, uma fonte de consulta sobre os tipos de hinos para toda a classe.This work aims to investigate the adaptation of the organist of the Christian Congregation Church of Brazil in relation to the modifications in the new hymnal (No. 5), as well as the impact it has had on the way the organists study the new and old (and altered) hymns. The addition of the third staff has also been investigated. Two questionnaires, as a basis for the study, were sent to women organists (since only women are allowed to play the organ): a group of Official organists with a great deal of experience with Hymnal No. 4, and beginner organists (Apprentices), who had only studied Hymnal No. 5. The Official organists reported that many still present difficulties playing the altered hymns of the latest edition because of the differences between the left hand and pedal. The Apprentices admitted not having any problems since they never came in contact with other editions of the hymnal. Considering that the Christian Congregation Church of Brazil only allows hymns to be performed during services, exercises were elaborated to help them adapt to the new hymnal, since in 194 of the 480 hymns, the lower note of the left hand and the pedal are not the same for several measures. The material presented is intended to aid mainly the Official organists, however, it may be utilized by all organists as a source for the many different types of hymns

    Towards an Efficient Finite Element Method for the Integral Fractional Laplacian on Polygonal Domains

    We explore the connection between fractional order partial differential equations in two or more spatial dimensions with boundary integral operators to develop techniques that enable one to efficiently tackle the integral fractional Laplacian. In particular, we develop techniques for the treatment of the dense stiffness matrix including the computation of the entries, the efficient assembly and storage of a sparse approximation and the efficient solution of the resulting equations. The main idea consists of generalising proven techniques for the treatment of boundary integral equations to general fractional orders. Importantly, the approximation does not make any strong assumptions on the shape of the underlying domain and does not rely on any special structure of the matrix that could be exploited by fast transforms. We demonstrate the flexibility and performance of this approach in a couple of two-dimensional numerical examples

    Autosomal dominant hereditary spastic paraplegia: Novel mutations in the REEP1 gene (SPG31)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mutations in the <it>SPG4 </it>gene (spastin) and in the <it>SPG3A </it>gene (atlastin) account for the majority of 'pure' autosomal dominant form of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). Recently, mutations in the <it>REEP1 </it>gene were identified to cause autosomal dominant HSP type SPG31. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of <it>REEP1 </it>mutations in a cohort of 162 unrelated Caucasian index patients with 'pure' HSP and a positive family history (at least two persons per family presented symptoms).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>162 patients were screened for mutations by, both, DHPLC and direct sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Ten mutations were identified in the <it>REEP1 </it>gene, these included eight novel mutations comprising small insertions/deletions causing frame shifts and subsequently premature stop codons, one nonsense mutation and one splice site mutation as well as two missense mutations. Both missense mutations and the splice site mutation were not identified in 170 control subjects.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In our HSP cohort we found pathogenic mutations in 4.3% of cases with autosomal dominant inheritance. Our results confirm the previously observed mutation range of 3% to 6.5%, respectively, and they widen the spectrum of <it>REEP1 </it>mutations.</p

    On stability of discretizations of the Helmholtz equation (extended version)

    We review the stability properties of several discretizations of the Helmholtz equation at large wavenumbers. For a model problem in a polygon, a complete kk-explicit stability (including kk-explicit stability of the continuous problem) and convergence theory for high order finite element methods is developed. In particular, quasi-optimality is shown for a fixed number of degrees of freedom per wavelength if the mesh size hh and the approximation order pp are selected such that kh/pkh/p is sufficiently small and p=O(logk)p = O(\log k), and, additionally, appropriate mesh refinement is used near the vertices. We also review the stability properties of two classes of numerical schemes that use piecewise solutions of the homogeneous Helmholtz equation, namely, Least Squares methods and Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods. The latter includes the Ultra Weak Variational Formulation

    Opportunities for the detection, prediction, and treatment of breast cancer exist at three biological levels: systemically via the blood, at the whole organ level, and within the individual ductal lobular structures of the breast. This review covers the evaluation of approaches targeted to the ductal lobular units, where breast cancer begins. Studies to date suggest the presence of 5 to 12 independent ductal lobular systems per breast, each harboring complex cellular fluids contributed by local and systemic processes. New techniques for accessing and interrogating these systems offer the potential to gauge the microenvironment of the breast and distill biological risk profiles

    Facial expressions depicting compassionate and critical emotions: the development and validation of a new emotional face stimulus set

    Attachment with altruistic others requires the ability to appropriately process affiliative and kind facial cues. Yet there is no stimulus set available to investigate such processes. Here, we developed a stimulus set depicting compassionate and critical facial expressions, and validated its effectiveness using well-established visual-probe methodology. In Study 1, 62 participants rated photographs of actors displaying compassionate/kind and critical faces on strength of emotion type. This produced a new stimulus set based on N = 31 actors, whose facial expressions were reliably distinguished as compassionate, critical and neutral. In Study 2, 70 participants completed a visual-probe task measuring attentional orientation to critical and compassionate/kind faces. This revealed that participants lower in self-criticism demonstrated enhanced attention to compassionate/kind faces whereas those higher in self-criticism showed no bias. To sum, the new stimulus set produced interpretable findings using visual-probe methodology and is the first to include higher order, complex positive affect displays

    Emotional Speech Perception Unfolding in Time: The Role of the Basal Ganglia

    The basal ganglia (BG) have repeatedly been linked to emotional speech processing in studies involving patients with neurodegenerative and structural changes of the BG. However, the majority of previous studies did not consider that (i) emotional speech processing entails multiple processing steps, and the possibility that (ii) the BG may engage in one rather than the other of these processing steps. In the present study we investigate three different stages of emotional speech processing (emotional salience detection, meaning-related processing, and identification) in the same patient group to verify whether lesions to the BG affect these stages in a qualitatively different manner. Specifically, we explore early implicit emotional speech processing (probe verification) in an ERP experiment followed by an explicit behavioral emotional recognition task. In both experiments, participants listened to emotional sentences expressing one of four emotions (anger, fear, disgust, happiness) or neutral sentences. In line with previous evidence patients and healthy controls show differentiation of emotional and neutral sentences in the P200 component (emotional salience detection) and a following negative-going brain wave (meaning-related processing). However, the behavioral recognition (identification stage) of emotional sentences was impaired in BG patients, but not in healthy controls. The current data provide further support that the BG are involved in late, explicit rather than early emotional speech processing stages

    Status of Intraductal Therapy for Ductal Carcinoma in Situ

    The intraductal approach is particularly appealing in the setting of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a preinvasive breast neoplasm that is thought to be entirely intraductal in its extent. Based on an emerging understanding of the anatomy of the ductal system as well as novel techniques to leverage the access accorded by the intraductal approach, researchers are actively exploring how ductal lavage, ductoscopy, and intraductal infusion of therapeutic agents may enhance breast cancer treatment. Both cytologic and molecular diagnostics continue to improve, and work is ongoing to identify the most effective diagnostic biomarkers for DCIS and cancer, although optimal targeting of the diseased duct remains an important consideration. Ductoscopy holds potential in detection of occult intraductal lesions, and ductoscopically guided lumpectomy could increase the likelihood of a more comprehensive surgical excision. Exciting pilot studies are in progress to determine the safety and feasibility of intraductal chemotherapy infusion. These studies are an important starting point for future investigations of intraductal ablative therapy for DCIS, because as our knowledge and techniques evolve, it is likely that DCIS may be the target most amenable to treatment by intraductal therapy. If such studies are successful, these approaches will allow an important and meaningful transformation in treatment options for women diagnosed with DCIS

    A study on spline quasi-interpolation based quadrature rules for the isogeometric Galerkin BEM

    Two recently introduced quadrature schemes for weakly singular integrals [Calabr\`o et al. J. Comput. Appl. Math. 2018] are investigated in the context of boundary integral equations arising in the isogeometric formulation of Galerkin Boundary Element Method (BEM). In the first scheme, the regular part of the integrand is approximated by a suitable quasi--interpolation spline. In the second scheme the regular part is approximated by a product of two spline functions. The two schemes are tested and compared against other standard and novel methods available in literature to evaluate different types of integrals arising in the Galerkin formulation. Numerical tests reveal that under reasonable assumptions the second scheme convergences with the optimal order in the Galerkin method, when performing hh-refinement, even with a small amount of quadrature nodes. The quadrature schemes are validated also in numerical examples to solve 2D Laplace problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions

    The development of cross-cultural recognition of vocal emotion during childhood and adolescence

    Humans have an innate set of emotions recognised universally. However, emotion recognition also depends on socio-cultural rules. Although adults recognise vocal emotions universally, they identify emotions more accurately in their native language. We examined developmental trajectories of universal vocal emotion recognition in children. Eighty native English speakers completed a vocal emotion recognition task in their native language (English) and foreign languages (Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic) expressing anger, happiness, sadness, fear, and neutrality. Emotion recognition was compared across 8-to-10, 11-to-13-year-olds, and adults. Measures of behavioural and emotional problems were also taken. Results showed that although emotion recognition was above chance for all languages, native English speaking children were more accurate in recognising vocal emotions in their native language. There was a larger improvement in recognising vocal emotion from the native language during adolescence. Vocal anger recognition did not improve with age for the non-native languages. This is the first study to demonstrate universality of vocal emotion recognition in children whilst supporting an “in-group advantage” for more accurate recognition in the native language. Findings highlight the role of experience in emotion recognition, have implications for child development in modern multicultural societies and address important theoretical questions about the nature of emotions
